What Does a School Counselor Do?

As your school counselor, I help students:

  • Build strong friendships
  • Learn how to manage emotions
  • Solve problems peacefully
  • Grow their confidence and self-awareness
  • Set goals and stay motivated

I don’t give grades or discipline students—instead, I’m here to teach important life skills, support well-being, and cheer students on as they grow. Services I Provide Here's how I work with students:

Classroom Counseling Lessons

I visit every class twice a month to teach social-emotional learning (SEL) skills using the Virginia SOL & American School Counselor Association Standards.
Each lesson includes movement, discussion, mindfulness, and hands-on learning! Every 5–7 weeks, I’ll send home a flyer with more detailed information about recent lessons and easy ways to continue the learning at home. These updates include conversation starters, activity ideas, and helpful resources to support your child’s growth outside of school, too!

Small Group Counseling

I run short-term, skill-based small groups for students who may benefit from extra support in areas like:

  • Friendship & social skills
  • Managing big feelings
  • Coping with changes
  • Confidence & self-esteem
  • Group invitations are sent home with parent permission.

Individual Check-ins

I meet one-on-one with students for a variety of reasons—maybe they’re having a hard day, need a quiet space to regulate, or want to talk through a problem. These short, solution-focused check-ins help students feel heard and supported.

Parent Resources

If you ever have a concern, need support, or just want to talk through something happening at home or school, I’m here to help. I can assist in exploring options, sharing ideas, or connecting you with additional support if needed.

You’re always welcome to reach out—I’m just an email or call away.

When to Reach Out to the Counselor

You’re never bothering me—I'm here to help! Parents often reach out when their child:

  • Seems overwhelmed, worried, or unusually sad
  • Struggles with friendships or peer conflicts
  • Is adjusting to a major change (moving, divorce, loss, etc.)
  • Needs support developing self-confidence or managing emotions Let’s team up to help them thrive.

 Learning at Home: SEL Edition!

Here are a few ways you can help your child practice social-emotional learning at home:

  • Read Together: There are lots of great SEL picture books
  • Practice Calming Tools: Try deep breathing, fidget toys, or a mindfulness video
  • Talk It Out: Ask open-ended questions like, “How did you show kindness today?” Need ideas? I’ve got you!
